Today was the final day of formal instruction. Tomorrow will be the public access test at the local mall and graduation ceremony. It has been a wonderfully exhausting ten days.
Lots of people have been calling and writing to check in and see how Dylan and Yoko are progressing. We're getting a lot of questions and that is a good thing. We don't mind answering any questions you have.
With that in mind, we thought it might be a good idea to post some of the most frequently asked questions along with a brief response to each.
Can I pet Yoko?
In most cases, yes. We're hoping that Yoko will help bridge the gap for Dylan in social settings. We're encouraging people to direct their questions about Yoko to Dylan. For example, ask Dylan if you can pet Yoko. Most-likely he will say "yes".
How old is Yoko?
Yoko celebrated her first birthday on February 10, 2009.
When did Yoko start training?
Yoko started her training right after birth. She was raised to be a service dog from the beginning.
What kinds of things can Yoko do?
Yoko is a multi-purpose service dog. She can track Dylan if he decides to wonder off. She has been trained to walk along-side him to discourage wondering. She can also do fun things like shake, roll over, play dead and give a high-five.
Do you have to buy an airplane ticket for Yoko?
Nope. Service dogs fly free. On most airlines, luggage doesn't. Go figure.
Where can Yoko go?
Anywhere Dylan goes: stores, the zoo, church and even school. The general rule is that if a wheelchair can go somewhere, so can Yoko.
Does Yoko listen well?
Yes, but she gets tired just like humans do. When she gets tired she may not be as motivated to follow commands. That's where treats become extra important. It's also important that she has her rest time.
Does Yoko eat food off the floor...like at restaurants?
She has been trained not to do that. If she is at McDonald's and there is a french fry next to her under the table for 30 minutes, chances are she will eventually try to gobble it.
Can Yoko do things like play fetch?
Yes, but for now we've been instructed to only let Dylan do fun things like that with her. This is so that they can continue to build that special bond.
Where will Yoko sleep?
In Dylan's room on a trundle bed.
What's the command for Yoko to relieve herself?
(Yes, someone really asked.) We say "Go potty" and plant ourselves while she circles around us on her leash and goes. Yes, it really works.
